About us

Two staff members in reception areaAt the PCO, we pride ourselves in working in an office that is unique in New Zealand.We draft legislation to support the Government's legislative programme. And we publish legislation online and in hard copy.

We are professionals with a high level of commitment and expertise, contributing to a service integral to the functioning of government.

  • Around 40% of staff are legally-qualified Parliamentary Counsel, in the Law Drafting group.
  • The Access to Legislation group uses a range of publishing and technical skills.
  • Corporate Services provides IT, administration, and other corporate support.

Our people

3 staff members at PCO standMany of our staff are highly trained, doing specialised work. To begin working as a Parliamentary Counsel requires two to ten years' post-qualification experience in a legal environment, or drafting experience in another jurisdiction. Many Access to Legislation staff work with tools that are unique to this office, so on-the-job training is provided when required.

Whatever the role, we work to a high standard, build effective relationships, and are flexible.

Working at the PCO

We are proud of the work we do here, and we are also proud of our great culture. The office provides a family-friendly environment with good working conditions. We are serious about work–life balance, fitting a little healthy fun into the working week. The PCO subsidises a range of exercise classes, we enjoy regular social club events, there is an active office netball team, and we roll up our sleeves with corporate volunteering, and we also supply fresh fruit!

The office is across the road from Parliament, close to the Botanic Garden, Lambton Quay, and the waterfront.

We are a friendly team and believe in celebrating achievements and making time to have fun.  We have an active social club, encourage social activities and even have a social netball team.

KiwiSaver

The PCO provides an employer contribution to KiwiSaver members at the rate of 4% for those who elect to pay 4%.
